I wanted to ask if anyone has attended in the past, and if so how they valued their experience? Essentially, was it worth the time and money invested? Do you feel as if you learned techniques you could apply to your own research or projects?

One Answer:

Hello,

I have experience 2 times, one was virtual, and the other one was real.

The first one were the virtual sessions of the Cambridge 2009 MLSS, and I also went to the MLSS in Singapore last year.

The MLSS have an incredibly deceptive name, in the sense that most sessions assume you have a good hold on the topic of ML.

I've been studying ML for well over 2 years before going to Singapore, and I still had some troubles with some of the lectures. And a friend who did his major in statistics had the same experience.

I can safely say that people that had little to no idea of ML , and went there hoping to obtain knowledge thought that their money was ill spent. An I would agree.

In conclusion, a MLSS is a great opportunity to do networking with good researchers in the area, and meet people working on ML, but, unless you have a good hold on ML, you'll have a hard time understanding some of the lectures.
