Hello, I have been a Java Developer for 14 years. I am very interested in Machine Learning and I am doing the online course on ML provided by Coursera. I am wondering about any additional career opportunities that can be provided my ML. Can a Java Developer successfully use ML to further his career or does he have to leave the application domain and start a new career as a data scientist?

I agree with ffriend; while your job may not explicitly call for ML skills doesn't mean you can't apply it. Find a way to apply it and show the value that you bring to the table. It may score you some gold stars on your next review.

That's perfectly ok to combine Java development and machine learning. I would say, you have 2 main options here.

First, you can start to incorporate ML into your normal Java applications. For example, add spam filter to your web app, or cluster your users, or build regression model for your ERP system... Weka will help you a lot with such kind of tasks.

Second, you can turn to corporation level data mining. Today many organizations are looking for people who can organize and analyze their data.

There are many more possibilities for Java developer with machine learning/data mining/statistics knowledge. This is more a question of preference rather than possibility.
