Bill Gates made an interesting remark about deep learning today:

The ultimate is computers that learn. So called deep learning which started at Microsoft and is now being used by many researchers looks like a real advance that may finally learn. It has already made a big difference in video and audio recognition - more progress in the last 3 years than ever before.

Did deep learning really originate at Microsoft? What work might he be referring to?

Additionally, I wonder if Microsoft is currently working on deep learning. Is their involvement anywhere on the scale of Google's?

Personally, the first time that I heard about deep learning in the industry was something about Microsoft's audio recognition. This would make sense for me, just as the fact that they had the idea for the tablet before Apple... I think @gdahl should be the best person here to answer that for sure... Nevertheless, I think this question fits Quora better than MetaOptimize. You should probably get better answers in there.
