I'd like to get a good introduction to random projections.

Something halfway between application and theory, free and accessible with a light-moderate ML background would be ideal.

You can read this which isn't too theory heavy: Experiments with Random Projections for Machine Learning , and maybe this one too that actually came out from the database community.

These papers also have some reference to the background (e.g., proofs of the Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma).
