See the Wikipedia entry. Among the popular ones, IBM's Watson is being touted as the next big thing in automated QA. START from MIT was the first web-based QA system.

Do you, or anyone here, know what algorithm is used for the Akinator (www.akinator.com) bot? It actually does the opposite, but it intrigues me nonetheless :)

There is another question which discusses libraries/toolkits for natural language search (question answering).

I will leave this question open, though, because it seems that you are also interested in web applications and implementations where you don't have access to the source or underlying techniques.
