Hello,

suppose you might buy some software to be used in a ML/NLP/DM laboratory. What software package would you ask for? Let's say: Matlab (with some toolboxes), SPSS, and what else?

I know that there is a lot of free software one can use like R, Weka, Rapidminer, python packages, and so on. However, the above question targets commercial software.

Thanks.

If it's a research lab I'd recommend mathematica; deriving ML algorithms sometimes requires differentiating and integrating, or solving recurrences, etc, and mathematica really helps with that.

I don't know that there's a "right answer" to this, but I'd look for MATLAB on 64-bit hardware. I'd also point out the popularity of "roll your own" as a solution, and the fact that it's not the same as using public domain software. I frequently write my own solutions because the problem demands a very specific solution.

I would consider picking up some commercial tools, too, such as CART, etc. kdNuggets has a good list of tools.
