I think PRML is actually one of the most widely used books for machine learning. Some instructors put it up as suggested reading (like Andrew Ng from Stanford) without using any other books. The course I followed in Amsterdam used the Bishop book as well. The name of the course was something like 'machine learning: pattern recognition'. However, I assume you are from the states and looking for something more nearby.

Here is another one at the university of Pittsburgh.
