Hello, In my company I am developing Machine Learning project, and for this moment my algorithm launched on single computer is not enough to handle amount of data that I have to deal with. I need some hardware to distribute it and experiment with performance. But management refuses to give me better/more computers and they wants me to handle unrealistic amount of requests. Do you have any ideas how can I convince them that I really need more hardware? What arguments should I use? |

As Robert said, you need to calculate the ROI (Return of Investment) of the hardware you are asking for. You have to calculate how much is the hardware going to cost and how much is the hardware going to earn to the company, it is unrealistic to say that the ROI is one year. Usual ROI's in technology are about 3 to 5 years. You need a well assembled PPT presentation (they love PPT) with realistic numbers on computer prices and investment. Be sure to have them right, because you might not be able to get more money afterwards. Another thing you could do, is ask them for a sum of money to be spent during the 5 years the ROI will come to realize, and you will buy better computers each year, thus minimizing the total cost of the invest. |

You need to present the fabled business case. The data that your manager is looking for is:
If the result is positive for the company, you will get your hardware. Costing (1) is easy. Costing (2) is a bit harder. You need to show the limitations of what you can do now (i.e. resort to sampling, or having the computer take ages return answers) and what you would be able to do with more hardware (global picture, answers quicker) and calculate what that means in actual dollars earned. |
