What is definition of "Selectional Preference" in the context of NLP? |

If I remember correctly, selectional preference refers to the semantic soft constraints imposed on each other by the predicative part or the arguments in a phrase. Basically, if you have an ambiguous verb, each of its possible meanings use arguments with different semantic roles. If you look at the arguments, you may in turn find one that requires a sort of "type coercion" in order to fill a particular role. So the predicate help to analyse the arguments, and conversely. That's why one can say that each part of the phrase has some preferences that help select the right meaning/construction. |
